CHAPTER TEN

When the plane landed in Spain, Ellie let out a relieved sigh. “Crap, what a journey. No apologies for the three-hour delay, and I could have done without the ten minutes of nerve-wracking turbulence. Those poor kids. Their screams will live with me for a lifetime.”

Brian collected the suitcase from the carousel. “Granted, that’s not the best flight I’ve ever made. Scared the shit out of me, I can tell you. Okay, forget all about that now. Let’s get out of here quick, before everyone starts queueing up for a taxi.”

“Is the hotel far?”

“Not too far. Should be around a ten-minute drive, unless the driver insists on taking us the scenic route.”

She laughed. “He probably will. The trouble is, how will we know?”

The taxi rank was full outside. They hopped in the first taxi and gave the driver the name of the hotel they had booked via the Internet. He pulled into the large driveway of the Casa Marlia a few minutes later.

“We should really get a hire car sorted out before we do anything else,” Brian said, picking up the suitcase.

Ellie chuckled. “Maybe it would have been better if you’d said that back at the airport, when we were surrounded by car rental kiosks.”

“Smart arse, you could’ve suggested it earlier.”

“Hey, don’t blame me. You insisted you had everything covered and told me not to worry about that side of things.”

He pulled a face at her. “Why do you have to be always right, Mrs. Lynx?”

“That’s why you married me, isn’t it? To keep you in line.”

“Go on, get inside. I’ll ask at reception about the car.”

“Perhaps you can ask how far Matt’s place is from here too.”

“Already thought of that. Do you want to take a trip out there now, or leave it until tomorrow?”

“I’m desperate to get out there and snoop around. However, I’m also keen to recover from our dreadful journey. What if we get unpacked, spend a little time down by the pool, then head out that way tonight after our meal?”

“Sounds good to me. I won’t be a minute.” Brian left her standing close to the lift, with their suitcase, and approached the receptionist. He returned soon after, beaming and dangling two sets of keys in his hands. “Car and room sorted.”

They took the lift to the fourth floor and opened the door to their room, which was extremely compact. A double bed dominated the floor space, a chest of drawers had been squeezed into a corner, and on either side of the bed stood the smallest of bedside tables. The en suite bathroom wasn’t much bigger, either. The shower cubicle had black mould in the far corner, and the porcelain sink had a huge chip. Ellie was too scared to check what kind of germs were lurking beneath the toilet seat.

Ellie shuddered. “Wow, this place is the pits. Not sure I’ll be trusting you to pick our accommodation in the future.”

Brian tossed the suitcase on the bed and walked back towards the door.

“Hey, where are you going?”

“To complain, get an upgrade.
